Even though my boat's wiring is in good order and all circuits are fused, I would like to fit a battery cut out switch in the possative cable, so that, in the event of a electrical problem I can kill all electrical power, has any body tried this out, if so is the possative cable the one to break.Any Ideas would be welcome.
kind regards.
William Wright.

Don't cut off the battery while the engine is running. Unless you don't like your alternator.
George

Yes -- the battery cut-out switch is placed in the positive battery cable at the battery.

It's a good idea to have a battery switch for both single or dual batteries. I keep the auto bildge pump wired to one of the battery "inlet" sides of the switch so that the bildge float switch is always hot and never turned off.

Some alternators can benefit from a battery switch that has afd (alt field disconnect). If you alternator isn’t designed for that it may be possible (I’d have to think about this) to use a battery isolator (diode) or battery combiner in conjunction with a battery switch to disconnect a battery from the boat’s electrical while the engine(s) are running without frying the diodes in the alternator as RubberFrog mentions.
