What would cause one battery in a 24volt system to discharge more than the other every time?

Re: battery discharge

Depends. Two twelves in series, right? How do you charge them- do they each get the same exact charging? Are they each the precise same age, brand & model, and from the same manufacturer's lot? Do any 12 volt items connect to only one battery?

Re: battery discharge

If the voltage difference is significant (i.e. one holds a charge at 12.2v, the other at 13.2v) you have a defective or damaged battery. Having the two batteries in series is not good. The damaged battery is already taking down the good battery. If/when either battery fails to perform and needs to be replaced, you need to replace both of the batteries, not just the one. The one battery that appears to be good may fail at any time, without warning.

I am going thru this very thing with brand new batteries on my 24v starting system. One will not hold a charge to spec. Altho only required to replace the one battery, manf insisted on replacing both for the reason described above. Said they don't want me to experience any problems 6-mos from now.

Re: battery discharge

This goes for all 24v systems that use two 12v batteries in series (ie. diesel engines). Replace both at the same time with matching batteries with the same ratings.
