Have a 15hp Johson 1987, with electric start. Sometime the motor sets a month or two between uses. Want to buy a new battery for the starter.
1. Standard or Deep Cycle?
2. Will a motorcycle battery be big enough or shoul I get a garden tractor size?

Deep cycle. It will last a lot longer for how you're going to use it. I would get something around 40-50Ah; basically the largest battery that isn't too much trouble to carry around. The large capacity isn't so much for starting as it is for running lights, etc. Don't bother with gel cells, AGM are great though.

You'll pay darned near as much for a garden tractor battery than you will for a group 24 auto battery that has far more capacity. And you can use it in your car if needed!!!!

15hp? Do you use it on your boat? What size? etc. Do you use it on a rental? Only asking as if using it on a rental then need a lighter battery. If using on your own boat and trailering/car topping then differnent story.
Please let us know which?

Homesteader: Do a search on Odyssea batteries. I have a small boat with a 25 Merc. Weight and space is at a premium. THe Odyssea is small, light and pretty powerful. I have had mine over a year, fish salt almost every weekend and it works flawlessly. I don't think I would run a trolling motor though. I have a Trojan for that. Mike
