Battery Hookup for 83 Honda 10hp DC outlet

Ok this is probably going to sound like a really stupid question that I think I all ready know the answer to. I have an 83 Honda BF100. It has the the charger & DC cord to run lights etc. I am going to hook it back up to the battery to keep my battery charged for accessories (nav lights etc). There are two wires coming off of the Dc outlet where it plugs into the engine, gray & black. Every battery or accessory I have ever wired anything electrical to the negative was always the black wire.

Is this the case here. Black negative ....... Gray positive. Im guessing that's the case but I don't want to cross & short anythng out. Thanks.

That outlet is usually wired red and green but after 25 years, who knows, what has been done.Yes you can assume that black is ground but ,as I said,without seeing what you are dealing with its hard to say.

The egg shaped (aft side) part is "+" while the half egg )to the front) is "-"

On my 8hp it is marked on the inside of the plug -&+ I am not sure about yours

A simple test would be to take a 12v light bulb, and ground one side to the motor chassis and place the other side across one of the terminals in question. If the lamp lites, that is the positive terminal.

That charging system does'nt work that way and has to be connected to a battery to function.You can however connect it to that battery and test for any AC voltage going into that battery.If so you are either backwards or have a faulty rectifier.

This helps me quite a bit also! I was just given an 83 BF100 10 hp, and I was wondering about the 12DC hookup also. This would be sufficient to charge a big battery for accessories, lights, etc?

The output is 12 volts 60 watts DC designed for battery charging and lighting. A "big" battery is questionable however. It has a 5 amp fuse.

Yeah, I guess what I meant, was that it would charge a standard marine battery. I think "big" wasn't the best adjective there...

I just got the same motor and was wondering the same thing. Is 12v @ 5 amps enough to keep a marine battery charged? I plan to use it for trolling and I will be using VHF, a powerful depth finder and electric downriggers.
Is 5 amps enough?

Hey guys another option is call a atv dealer for Honda and get the plug that went on the older atv's on the handle bars. Same plug.
