New to I/O boating...

Just wanted to know if a set of jumper cables is worthwhile having when on the water.

I've always carry a set in my cars without every having to use it... Several times they have come in handy to help a stranded motorists or co-worker.

My old 35hp outboard could be started with a rope pull in a pinch and it didn't have any accessories to drain the battery either.

Anyone keep a set as part of your toolkit?

It can't hurt. A jumper pack is even better to have. A friend of mine had both on his boat.

Yup- and I have for years. Also, I now keep a jumpbox aboard- but my boat is big enough that storage isn't much of a problem.
Over the years they've helped many a stranded boater!

A jumper pack sounds like a better idea... never thought of that :)

I think that this is the better way to go. A little extra weight but safer in my opinion. Water and electric don't mix to well.

I keep one of them on the boat and always have it fully charged before every outing. I haven't needed it yet, but if I do or someone else does, it will be ready.

By all means keep one or the other on board. I had a new 2003 Stratos boat & kept jumper cables in it & needed them a couple times to jump my engine from the trolling motor batteries. I took a booster pack on all night tournaments & needed it once as well. There's nothing like being prepared, & there's definitley nothing like being unprepared when your out at night all alone way down the lake with no freinds around to help you out. After switching my starter battery to a deep cycle trolling battery I never needed them again , but wouldn't leave home without one or the other either.

Have you ever tried to "push start" a boat?;)

Yep, I keep a set on my boat.

Yep, I keep a set on my boat.

Funny you mention it...

I out a rebuilt Olds 455 in my brothers Jet Boat and the motor was really stiff... I called the rebuilder and was told to tow it around the block a couple of times to loosen it up...

My reply was I could tow it all the way to the lake and it would still be stiff since it was in a BOAT :D

Every other boat I've owned didn't need a battery to start...

I've started my Atomic 4 with a crank once just to prove I could do it and all of my Outboards... even the 40 hp one had a rope start as a backup...

I've already got the jumper pack should I should never need it... right?
