while working on another issue over the weekend i discovered that my outboard is not charging the battery...i'm only getting 12.4 volts max with the motor running....so i'm obviously operating at a defecit. I checked the rectifier, and it was bad, so i replaced this, but i'm still not getting a proper charge to the battery...i'm guessing that the stator is probably bad also? am I on the right track? (or are there other parts in the charging system that i should be looking at also?)

Re: battery not charging

You dont say what engine but:-

It would be worthwhile checking the coils. Guessing that you have three wires coming from them, with the rctifier disconnected you should be able to measure a low resistance between any two and between one pair (Yellow and yellow/blue probably) you'll find the reistance is double that between the others.

With the motor running you could check the AC volts between these wires. You should get something in excess of 12V betwen yellow/grey and either of the other two when the motor is revved. I dont know what you'll get between yellow and yellow blue though.

Re: battery not charging

Check your new rectifier. Whatever blew the original may have blown this one also. It only takes an instant to blow a rectifier.

Re: battery not charging

I have a 87 110hp Johnson, same problem last year as you are seeing. I changed the stator first because it tested bad, still not charging. I checked the rect, found the other problem. It turned out in my case both were bad and now I have a better running motor and a charging system again. This was just my experience and without making the proper tests I won't act like I know more than I do.
Good luck
