Hi guys, Do you take your battery out over the winter? My dealer told me to just disconnect it and leave it in the boat. I am in Wisconsin, and the boat stays in my garage.

Thanks.

I always take mine out and charge it once a month or so to keep it up to max. Just remember not to put on concrete as it will drain your battery and destroy it wood is fine but not congrete

The manufacturers all recommend that you take it out, charge it and keep it in a cool, dry place. Point about not keeping on concrete is an important one too.

This is probably a dumb question but, is it okay to leave on concrete if battery is still in battery box?

The to get the most life from it keep it in a temp. controlled enviroment (I like the back of a closet in the house). Trickle charge it once a month and you should be good.

scotiany, just get you a small piece of 2X6 to set the battery box and battery on and you will be fine.
If it will be in a garage, then you should be ok with just disconnecting it and charge it ever once in a while.

Skipper, Is you garage attached to your house?

If so, then I would leave it in the garage and just disconnect. Most garages attached to the house do not get to the same temp extreme an unheated unattached garage does. If your garage is unattached, then take the battery inside. It will increase the total life of your battery. It gets pretty cold in the winter here in Wisconsin. Also, trickle charge it once a month to keep the sulfate crystals from forming permanently.
Here are the directions from Johnson Controls. They make a lot of the batteries out there including Diehard, Fleet Farm, Autozone's brand etc.
>>
Deep Cycle/Marine Batteries
Storing your battery for extended periods

• Charge the battery until it is completely charged
• Store it in a cold place but not where it will consistently go below 32°F
• Check the battery every two months and recharge if necessary
• Remove all electrical connections from the battery including series/parallel connectors
>>

Scotiany, it is alright to set the battery on the concrete in the battery box, but I would still use a 2x6 like Spinnerbait_nut said. Better to be safe than sorry. Here is an update on the concrete question from the Johnson controls website.
>>
8. Will it discharge the battery if leave it sitting on concrete?
No, today's batteries utilized polypropylene plastic for the case material. They will not be effected. When possible, always store a battery in a cool dry location.
>>

The new optima batteries are out. Expensive, but supposedly the next great breakthrough.
http://www.optimabatteries.com/
