Re: Battery out for winter??
Skipper, Is you garage attached to your house?

If so, then I would leave it in the garage and just disconnect. Most garages attached to the house do not get to the same temp extreme an unheated unattached garage does. If your garage is unattached, then take the battery inside. It will increase the total life of your battery. It gets pretty cold in the winter here in Wisconsin. Also, trickle charge it once a month to keep the sulfate crystals from forming permanently.
Here are the directions from Johnson Controls. They make a lot of the batteries out there including Diehard, Fleet Farm, Autozone's brand etc.
>>
Deep Cycle/Marine Batteries
Storing your battery for extended periods

Charge the battery until it is completely charged
Store it in a cold place but not where it will consistently go below 32°F
Check the battery every two months and recharge if necessary
Remove all electrical connections from the battery including series/parallel connectors
>>

Scotiany, it is alright to set the battery on the concrete in the battery box, but I would still use a 2x6 like Spinnerbait_nut said. Better to be safe than sorry. Here is an update on the concrete question from the Johnson controls website.
>>
8. Will it discharge the battery if leave it sitting on concrete?
No, today's batteries utilized polypropylene plastic for the case material. They will not be effected. When possible, always store a battery in a cool dry location.
>>

The new optima batteries are out. Expensive, but supposedly the next great breakthrough.
