Hi I went into Wally world today to pick up a starter battery, I saw two batteries .One was a 27 -850n and the other was a 24 -1000n.My question is which is the better one?.Will the larger size last longer or does that really matter?I'd be buying it for a 125 hp force on a 18 ft bayliner.

Re: Battery question

24 and 27 refer to the physical size of the battery. A group 27 is physically larger than a group 24. A battery physically larger (27) than a smaller one (group 24) technically can contain heavier/larger plates and technically have a higher CCA (cold cranking amp) rating. However in your example, that is not always true. Unless you have the CCA ratings swapped, the smaller battery actually has a higher CCA rating. The term "better" is rather vague when describing anything. Better -- but at what? Will one last longer than the other? Probably not. Will one crank the engine faster than the other? No because they are both 12 volt batteries. Will one crank the engine longer than the other? The 1000 CCA battery MAY but it is no guarantee. I suspect the 24/1000 is a slightly higher "guality" battery than the 27/850 and the price may reflect that. But gain -- are you certain you don't have the numbers swapped and that you are comparing batteries in the same series (not just the same size).

Re: Battery question

The batteries are both the same brand(everstart ? can't remember now ) I just found this very strange .I tripled checked thinking I was wrong and the cca follow the same I figured the bigger one had more reserve and would have more cranking amps.I only noticed because they were side by side on the shelf. They are different sizes and are both marine starters, I believe one had cca about 650 and the other around 825 I'll have to check for sure and post it

Re: Battery question

Most manufacturers have more than one "line" or "model" of battery under their brand name. Everstart is the brand like Chevrolet and Ford are brands.. Models are Malibu and Impala for Chevy for example. Mustang and Focus are Ford models. So look carefully at the labels. Everstart xxxx vs Everstart xxxx where xxxx is the model or series. You've given us a couple different sets of numbers. Which way is it?

Re: Battery question

The everlast brand is made by Johnson Controls (Walmart and Sam's has a contract with Johnson Controls)
Johnson Controls ownes 49% of Interstate
The Everlast battery is the same as the Interstate but is just made from a
little lighter materials

Re: Battery question

So I went to walmart to check out the batteries again I realized the delemia I had one was a 24m- 1000 with a cca of 800 and the second one is 27dc-850 with a cca of 675 so the second one is a deep cycle/starter battery .So with that being said what would be the better choice for a starter for the 125 hp.

Re: Battery question

one was a 24m- 1000 with a cca of 800 and the second one is 27dc-850 with a cca of 675 so the second one is a deep cycle/starter battery.

Decisions, decisions....

- The 24m is built more like an automotive battery and designed to deliver large bursts of power for short durations. It won't tolerate slow long discharging as would happen while running the stereo or lights with the engine off. It'll do it, but the battery will suffer, slowly being damaged if used as a deep cycle.

- The 27DC is a hybrid cranking/deep cycle. It will serve both purposes, but won't work as well as,,, a cranking or,,, a deep cycle battery. It's a compromise.

If you want a battery to JUST start the OB I go with the 24m as it has more cranking power.

Now, If your OB dies and you have to limp back to the dock with your trolling motor (if you have a TM) the 27DC would be the battery to have. You could run down the 27DC with the trolling motor and not damage the battery. The 24M would be damaged by running it down with a trolling motor. Would it kill the 24M, no not right away, but the battery would suffer some damage.

Re: Battery question

I could go to Wally World and get the best marine cranking/starting battery they have for 80 or 85. I can go to my local Chaparral dealer and get an Interstate with higher ratings for 100. Wally world batteries are now manufactured by the same manufacturers as Interstate, but to lower specifications. For a little bit more, you can get the higher specs.

To answer your question, though, better safe than sorry. I'd go with the 27 series.

Re: Battery question

You don't need a strictly cranking battery for an outboard. The hybrid one will be plenty.

Re: Battery question

thanks for the info I know when I try to start my force the battery needs to almost 100 % so I was looking for something with high cranking but I may look into the hybrid

Re: Battery question

If that's the case its proably more a problem with your connections or the battery itself is on its last legs.

Or the motor needs work (e.g. weak starter, carbs out of adjustment, malfunctioning choke, poor compression, fouled spark plugs, etc.)
