Re: battery questions

NO...would be better off just tapping off the first battery for your 12V.

Re: battery questions

How are you charging the batteries, a standard 12V alternator will not charge that set up, you can charge 1 battery not both. If you pull and charge at home on a charger then no problem.

Just run your 12V load, positive and negative, directly to one of the batteries. If the conductor is large enough, you can share one conductor with the 24V circuit. Using the the battery on the left side of your diagram, you would run the + conductor for your 12V circuit to the + terminal on that battery and complete the circuit using the existing - wire that is already in the diagram (far left).

I was wondering why you ask for the alternator and charging. now i know, it is not going to work as the motor will try to charge the battery,..... thanks for reminding me, i will just get an extra battery.

now one more question. I need to install the battery at the back of the boat. so i need to install a cable for both the 12v and the 24v to the front. what guage of cable should i use?

Re: battery questions

With the issue around charging 12V and 24V systems and uneven load sharing on the two batteries why are you doing this? What's the advantage to running a 24V trolling motor? Can you not purchase a 24V RV/marine battery and keep the two loads separate?

As for the wiring question of how to tap the 12V motor without your resistor/rectifier think of it this way, Number your battery terminals like this:

Batt 1 -ve #1
Batt 1 +ve #2
Batt 2 -ve #3
Batt 2 +ve #4

12V motor: Connect between #1 & #2
24V motor: Connect between #1 & #4
