I got this 5yrd old battery in my new to me boat, which I bought a month ago. I have no issue w/ it starting my yami 115 motor. I charged it but noticed that the "charge indication status" is always low after a couple of hours at 6A. So I run to Wal-mart and buy a new battery. I put the new battery on the charger just for curiosity sake. It also measures "No Charge". I know what you guys are thinking, who knows how long that battery's been sitting on the shelf at wal-mart. The manufacturer date on the side of the battery indicated manufactured date of last month. I figure my old battery is good and return the wal-mart battery. So should I be worried about being stranded at the lake this weekend 4 hrs from home. Or is it my cheap wal-mart charger? I replaced the charger with the same unit and no difference. I would replaced the battery but it's probably a day's worth of work because it's in a tight spot and I have to remove the fuel tank for access. I'm leaving for camp Sunday o'dark thirty. I run minimal electronics. Just a FF. I don't have room for a second battery right now. There is space, but the fuel tank has to come out and some fabrication is required for the 2nd battery on install. BTW, I have a schumacher charger.

Hey Salmonee,
Why not just go buy one of those jump start battery packs for $50 and forget about the worries. If your current battery dies on you, just jump it.....Your magneto will get you home. THEN go buy another battery.:D

We need pics of your set up but if it was me I would figure out a better place for the battery if I had to remove the gas tank to access it. I spent the money on an Optima blue top battery from Costco and it is a great battery, also picked up one of those jumper boxes. I have no worries now about a dead battery. If you are 4 hours from home I would definitely get some redundancy, especially with a 5 year old battery. It is probably on borrowed time unless it was meticulously maintained.

Sound like the charger is sick to me--or you got a bad battery from WM.
