I am looking to purchase a battary for use with a 30 lb thrust trolling motor and a fish finder. First queston can i use both with only 1 battary and second queston does any body have advise on size of battary. I own a 14 ft flat bottom and will be fishing on fairly strong river current if that helps. mikeandronda@juno.com Thank you.

Re: battery ?'s

a good deep cycle marine battery should be allright. Or 2 even. Is the trolling motor the only source of propulsion??

if its the only source you might want to consider going to a gas motor with those strong currents.

First, it is ok to run both off of a single battery.
You may, or may not, experience a problem.
Sometimes the locator will pick up interference created by the electric trolling motor.
If so, you can get a small battery for a lawn tractor to power the locator, $20.

For the battery, it depends on how much you will use it, and how often. Once a week, for 4 or 5 hours, you can use a size 24 deep cycle marine battery.

If you plan on using it for 10 or 12 hours, or for several days in a row, I would get a size 27. Look for one that has a larger number of amps, or minutes of use. (that is how they are rated)

It doesn't have to be expensive or brand name, just make sure it is a deep cycle marine battery.
$50-75 should cover it.
I don't recomend a "dual purpose" battery.
