Battery Setup
I have four batteries in my boat. 1 and2 are deep cycle and are maintained by a 2 bank on board charger.

Battery number 3 is a cranking battery. Connected to that battery are the Outboard and electronics.

The 4th battery is a cranking battery not used only serves as a backup. I would like to use the cranking battery 3 only for the outboard and cranking battery 4 only for all the electronics. I would like to get another 2 bank charger for battery 3 and 4. Thoughts?

Battery 1 and 2 Deep Cycle = Only used for trolling motors, charged by a 2 bank charger

Battery 3 Cranking battery = only used to start outboard nothing else. Charged by on board charger

Battery4 Cranking battery = Will only be used for electronics, Live wells, Lights, Fish Finders, Bilge. Charged by on board charger.

Re: Battery Set uo and charging procedure?

i have to ask why. A dual switch between 3 and 4 would be a better idea so they could both get some charge from the motor when its running and they both would act as a backup to the starter and with a acr you could just leave the switch on one battery and the other gets charged but in the event of a flat battery you flick the switch and start the engine. Add some details like what type and number of engines you have and what the 2 deep cycles are doing on the boat. Any battery switchs installed?

My thnking was running the livewells and Fish Finders on the cranking battey will possibly drain the cranking battery thus rendeing the livewells useless. I have a Mercury XR6 150 HP. The two deep cycle batteries are only used for the trolling motor. Can you draw a diagram of your idea?

Re: Battery Set uo and charging procedure?

Your plan is ok, but could be a lot simplier with only three batteries, a switch and one 3-bank on-board charger, so you'll save the space , cost and weight of one battery and one charger:

1- Cranking battery --> Main engine + accessories
2- Deep cycle battery --> Trolling motor
3- Deep cycle battery --> Trolling motor

All three connected to the same 3-bank on-board charger and, with a switch, the deep cycles batteries would serve as backup in case the cranking battery ever fail. Being continually charged by the main engine, the cranking battery will likely be enough to power the accessories. If you ever happen to completely drain your #1 cranking bettery running the accessories and have to use the deep cycles to start, you could always replace #1 with a larger (group 27 or 31) dual-purpose cranking/deep-cycle battery.

Sorry, forgot the switch, I realized I was wrong. The red lead coming from the two batteries hooked in series being 24V, you couldn't hook it to the switch.

In your case, i'd still use only 3 batteries. One large ( gr. 27 or 31) dual-purpose cranking/deep cycle for the engine and accessories and the 2 deep cycles for the trolling motor, all 3 charged by an on-board charger.

That seems the easiest way.

What battery do you recommend for as the dual purpose?
