If you accidentally short out the positive battery terminal through a jump cable on the engine (outboard)
frame, can this damage the ignition or any other function of the electrical system or charging system?
We are talking just a momentary "Spark" not causing wire overheat or anything drastic like that .
I recall cars from the '80's upward had a label displaying " Do not short out any ternimals as this will cause damage".

Re: Battery Short

check your fuse, i'm not real sure but that is what i'd check first, its on the same side as the starter, just a little further back, it should be an inline fuse.

No

This was DIRECTLY from positive terminal to frame
No fuse was present.

Re: Battery Short

not really sure but depending on the year of your motor, you might have burned a diode out, or a fuse like i posted before, i'm kinda new to this myself so take what i say with a grain of salt.

Re: Battery Short

If it was from positive to frame, the only damage would be to the ground cabling. If the ground cable/cables look OK, relax....
