I have a 96 25hp johnson and my battery has gone south, old age. I was wondering if; being as I do nothing but start my outboard if it would be suitable for me to use a lawn mower size battery? Some of the mowers are 18-30 hp. The boat is used for day trips, and there is a second battery for the t-motor in the boat. What do you think?

Re: battery size

A healthy garden tractor battery would be adequate for the job. They even make little battery boxes for them, but they're kinda hard to find. More likely to find those at PWC dealers. I figure the bigger the better, but reduced size and weight have their advantages too. Especially if you can pull start it anyhow. Does it also have a recoil? The "Offficial" response would be to use a regular duty marine starting battery, but...

Re: battery size

For the little difference in price and much greater capacity, install a real battery.

A large-ish motorcycle battery wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Re: battery size

Some of the 1996 25HP motors have unregulated rectifiers for charging, so check that first, because some batteries are not compatible.

Re: battery size

Thanx for the input , Guys. I go shop tomorrow and will check the options. Was looking to maybe save a few bucks and a little space, but if the cost is close, I may just go full size. Glad to know my options one way or the other.
