Battery Size

I have a size 27 battery that runs the accessories in my boat now. However the only thing that I use regularly is the Locator from that battery. Other items include bilge, livewell pump, and lights, all which RARELY get used- 5 or 6 times a year. The current battery won't take much of a charge anymore.
Should I go with a smaller battery such as a size 24 or something even smaller? Smaller would be nice. Saving some extra weight in the back of the boat would be good.
Dman

Re: Battery Size

i think you want to stick with a deep cell type. i don't know of any smaller than 24series personally. but i was wondering- have you checked the weight diff between 24 & 27 series? i bet there isn't alot of diff. just a thought

there is a 5 lbs diffrence in the 2 batterys i just went though this with my local battery man.i got the group 27 more run time and its only 5 lbs more weight also there was only a 10$ diffrence in the prices.but if you are not using it all that much you might want to go with a group 24. i just like to have the extra power there incase i need it

Re: Battery Size

You can get a very small battery, that will have plenty of power for the locator, and occasion use of the other items. Brother in law has a Vexilar portable locator originally for ice fishing. Now he has it in his boat, and runs his lights off of it on a regular basis.

Cabelas sells them.
$25
$30 w/charger
2 batteries and one charger, $50

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...dId=0016916&catalogCode=UC&parentId=cat21402& parentType=index&rid=&cmCat=MainCatcat21276

Re: Battery Size

First check the water level in the battery.
Next hook up a voltage drain to it like an ol car headlight and drain all the juice out of it.

Sometimes they need to be run all the way down and charged back up to hold charge right.

I do this 2 or 3 times a year just to keep them(3) at their best.

Re: Battery Size

Thanks for the help. I have not heard of draining all the power out of the battery. I'll give it a try!
Dman

Do not drain the battery all the way down. Starting batteries should not be discharged more than 20 percent. Deep cycle should not be drained more than 50 percent. Most important thing is to fully charge as soon as possible when you get home. Also in summer charge at least one time a month weather you use it or not.
Get a good automatic or smart charger that will fully charge with out overcharging. If it has removable caps make sure it is filled to the eye with distilled water.
