Hello, I need a little help wiring my perco battery switch. I have 70 yamaha. I have two batteries, one marine cranking, and one deep cycle for my accessories(stereo, lights, trolling motor ect). I'd like to run motor only off cranking battery, and everything else off other battery. I'd like to wire it up where I could switch over to accessory battery while cruising to charge it. Is this possible?, how would I wire the switch. It has batt 1, batt two, batt 1&2, and off options on switch. Thanks for any help I can get

Re: Battery switch wiring

Wire your OB to the starting battery and wire this battery to terminal 1 on your switch. Wire all of your accessory loads to the deep cycle and wire this battery to terminal 2 on the switch. If you have the switch on 1, you're running everything off the starting battery - and charging only that battery. If you have the switch on 2, you're running everything off the deep cycle - and charging only that battery. If you have the switch on 1 & 2, you're running everything on both batteries and charging both batteries.
So, when you're cruising and want to charge your accessory battery, simply switch to 2 and you'll charge (and run off) only that battery.

Re: Battery switch wiring

Never change the battery switch when the battery is running as it will fry the alternator. The easiest thing would be to add an ACR and then and separate the loads, but it will charge both batteries. Don't have to remember to switch back and forth, but it does cost about $100.

Correct me if im wrong, if I im on battery 1 as you described, no accessories will be powered, only the outboard

Re: Battery switch wiring

I think there is confusion here.

With a 1/2/Both switch, you can't separate accessories and the motor. All connections go to the common of the switch. If you want to wire all the accessories directly to the battery, you can do that but you won't be able to cut power to those accessories without putting in another switch.

An alternative is a different type of switch like this one. basically, its a DPST switch instead of a SPDT switch which the 1/2/Both switch is.
