I have a friend who to say the least it ignorant and cheap. He insisted on using a car battery on his boat. I know there this is bad. Please list the things that can happen so I can print this out and show him.

Re: Battery Usage

It may depend on what he's using it for. Using a car battery as a "starting" battery is better than using it as a deep cycle which you plan on fully discharging many times over.

Deep cycle batteries are desingned to withstand many more discharges without damage Vs. a car starting battery.

If using a car battery for starting only, it will work almost as well as a marine starting battery, with the exception that "good" marine batteries are built more durable, with heavier lead plates etc, to withstand more abuse. The bouncing etc. experienced in a boat may cause a car battery plate to crumble.

Notice I said "good marine battery", I think there are many batteries out there with a rope handle that are no better than your standard car battery.
