40ish sounds about right, did you ahve it trimmed properly? The "Classic" version of that boat runs about 40mph with a 3.0L, but also weighs about 700lbs less.

I have this boat (2006 version) with the same engine. With an aluminum 3 blade 19" prop I have been up to 46.5mph. I changed to a 21" 5 blade prop and now my top speed is around 42mph. The 19" prop would allow me to over rev my engine so when I went to the 5 blade, I went to 21". These measurements are with 35gal of gas and only 2 people on board.

Did you drain out the old gas?

I definatly think you should get more out of the boat. But not 50. I am running a 20p SS and the best I can get is about 45-46, my boat is a bit heavier than yours. I tried a 19 on my boat and it was way over revving. (same engine) Make sure that your tach is correct also. Trim it up properly, and see what you can get. Good luck.

I have a 19ft Maxum w/ a 4.3L @ 190hp. Maxum was owned by Brunswick, who owns Bayliner, so there will be some similarities. I have seen about 44-45mph on GPS, I also think 50mph is a pipe dream, unless u get a v8. I got that speed w/ a Bimini stowed in the up right position. If I took it off, it might give me 1 more mph.

I just found this out, but for now on I am keeping my boat at about half tank. Less weight; a full tank of gas weighs about 210lbs for my 35gal tank. Also if you have a bimini top take it down. Try closing your windshield or opening it. Mess around a little bit. Also if you are going against a current or wind, that could effect your GPS speed.

You are under propped a little bit. Your WOT range is 4400 to 4800, going to the next higher pitch should get your rpm in spec, and increase your speed a bit. Adjusting your trim is an ongoing process, don't just go by the gauge, experiment with different settings.

Well lets look at it for a moment.

1. How many people were aboard when you took your readings.
2. plz post your gearing it should be stamped on the outdrive leg
3. 2008 and it had gas in it...dump it and start over....be ready for a carb clean the carb is probably full of varnish.
4. i assum it is a 3 blade alum
5. it would not hurt to change your plugs...about 25 dollars
6. hope to hear from you and yes that boat should swing 50 with 2 people.

Like others have said - more information on the prop and gearing of your outdrive. My 185 4.3GL volvo SX (1.79 gearing ratio) usually does 48mph with a 19" four blade SS at 4600rpm (which should be your top RPM too but check your manual) with gas and 2-3 people in it. I can push it up to a little higher RPM (~4800) but don't. I like the holeshot of the 19" so I just keep the RPM in check while going fast. My 21" alum does +/- 1mph at the top. I would think if the 21" was a SS then I would get around 50mph but loose my holeshot compared to the 19" SS so I keep the 21" aluminum as a backup.

Anyway, your boat is 1' longer but I think if we knew more about your prop and gearing, we can tell you if there is a problem or suggest another prop. My guess is the prop is an aluminum 3 blade and it's holding you back a bit.

At the back of the prop you will notice a large nut. Draw a line one the nut and on the prop in one continouis line..make a run with the boat and check that line to see if it still line up. If it has moved you have a sun hub and need a new prop. I guess it could also be a coupler spinning ...you may want to post in the I/O section and see if a coupler can behave in such a manner.

Most boats that size/engine/outdrive combo come with a 14x23, 3 blade aluminum Merc prop from the factory. At least the ones I've been seeing in the showrooms the last several years. If you're at 4900rpm, you're underpropped with that 19 pitch and why you're only going 41mph. Keep in mind though that you wont get 50 mph and super hole shot at the same time if you prop up.

My apologies, I thought we were talking about the 185 model. Disregard the above.
