Just wondering . I got looking and I was thinking. what is the difference between a say 2.3 ford motor out of a ranger pickup and the marine engine? I relise the mainfolds and such are different but the block bell pattern and other things look the same am I wrong here?

Depends on the year, but all are same bellhousing, blocks are diff when ford put the dual plug heads on, otherwise besides alt, starter, dist manifolds should be good to go

A marine engine is NOT smogged, so your compression ratio is usually higher, your cam is different, "freeze" (core) plugs are brass not steel, head gaskets would contain stainless steel, your circulation pump would have a stainless impeller, etc. A marine engine is different. Some people have had success using an engine from a truck not a car, but realize a marine engine is NOT the same as an automotive engine. All electrical and fuel related parts are sealed or shielded for leaks or sparks to keep you from going BOOM!
