I'd say any 1500 lb or higher should do fine. Remember that you are not moving all of the weight of the boat, especially if you have a roller trailer. One with 2 gear ratios may a consideration if you have to winch it up a ways onto the trailer.
But as a rule of thumb for me, I use the biggest one I can get. I have an electric one that pulls 3000 lbs for a boat that weights about 3000 lbs. I'm just lazy tho.

I would agree with bifflefan. Go for the two speed minimum 1500#

You can't go too big but you certainly can go too small.

Consider the 5000lb boat.
Assume flat pull friction at 10% = 500lbs
A 20 Degree ramp will add another 35% pulling uphill. = 1750lbs
Total = 500 + 1750 = 2250lbs.

Winch ratings are quoted for a nearly empty spool. (Gotta love the Marketing guys!)
The winch with a full spool is down to about half the empty spool rating.
1500lb Winch with a full spool = 750 lb pull.
5000lb Winch with a full spool = 2500 lb pull.

The 5000lb winch with a full spool has a 2500lb capacity pulling a 2250lb load.
The 1500lb winch gave up right after the boat came out of the water!

Go BIG and GO Two Speed!
They are not that much more expensive!
You will never regret overbuying!

I have a bayliner 245 as in avatar pic, my winch pulls 3200lb and the boat weighs in around 7000lb

Thanks. I went with a 3200lb. Should I use cable or the cloth to pull it.

...Should I use cable or the cloth to pull it.

Your personal choice.

Nylon straps generally behave better than cable.

When there is no tension on a cable it is free to do whatever it wants.
Once you kink a cable, it's days are numbered.
More cable may fit on a spool than strap.
Cable tend to be stronger and last longer.

Unloaded straps just tend to stay on the spool quietly.
And Frayed straps don't put holes in your hand. :D

As noted on a recent discussion on this:

Go to the powerwinch website and use their numbers. Their smart guys have already done the math for you. And tested it. No need to try to figure it out.

Look at the speed of the retrieve. One guy bought a way-to-big winch and will be winching for days to get his boat out. If you are using a busy public ramp frequently, this could be a concern.
