bayliner a good pick 4 me?

i know people call bayliner "gayliner" and i know all about the rap that it has but you really cant beat the prick of these things new. Im thinking about buying the discovery 195 the 07 model. Ill be using the boat for fishing/crusing the delaware bay. was wondering if anyone had any input on them. all the pictures of the boat and the family on the boat looks like the water is as still as a 10 acre pond. Delaware bay is a little different. So also was wondering how that would be. Keep in mind that i went pretty far out there in a 16 foot alum. semi v before it was rough but no problem. they were also known a bilgeliners, because of the past poor construction, transoms and stringers rotting. the newer ones seem to be corrected. the style and water worthyness was not the problem. it doesn't matter what 19 footer you're running, when conditions get bad. you just have to go with the conditions. it's not a 30 footer and won't perform like one in rough water.

It will seem like a Cadillac after the 16' tin boat. Even so for a big bay my druthers would be to spend the same $$ on a used saltwater fishing boat.

New is new. I think they are a good buy as well regardless of the crap we've heard in the past.

Having had a Bayliner from the late 80's and seeing the quality of the newer ones, I would say they have made vast improvements.

My bet is that most Bayliner bashers have never owned one or set one foot in one to know any better.

I agree .... here in South Africa, bayliner is seen as one of the best boat brands available here ..... oh yes and yamaha .....

i'm not a Bayliner basher. i personally like them. it really comes down to how the boat was maintained. a lot of people that bought them were after the "bling" look, and didn't know a thing about up keep. they leased cars, never change the oil and turn them in for a new one every 2 -3 years.

Around here if you look at used boats around 15 to 18 years Bayliner/Searay/Maxum and any of that style boat pretty much become worth the same

I'm mainly a Chesapeake guy but I also boat the Delaware from time to time. It depends on what part of the Delaware you’re talking about but generally speaking the boat in question is pretty small and has minimal freeboard for big water activities.

The prevailing winds are out of the south in the summer so things will go from calm to rough in just a matter of minutes on a tide change. An out going tide against that southerly breeze will kick up rollers in a heart beat. Thunder storms are also an added danger that time of the year so a good VHF radio capable of receiving weather advisories is a must if you decide to venture forth.

Pick your days very wisely and expect the worst every time and you’ll be OK.

My dad has a 1989 Bayliner and it seems to be pretty solid. It is a larger boat. I like the newer Bayliner “Classic”, looks like the older style boats. Bayliners are what I call a budget boat but I think nowadays they are fine. They just don’t come standard with all the bells and whistles you would find standard on other boats. My dad does get quite a bit of water in the bilge, not sure if that is due to the construction or a leaky bellows. The drivelines are the same as what other boats use so I don’t see a problem as far as the engine and drive.

The small Bayliners were considered entry level boats. In the 80s to mid 90s. They developed a bad reputation for poor quality. This was partly due to poor maintenance, and partly due to mistakes and sometimes bad quality control at the factory. The quality of the boat literaly depended on whether the guy doing the hull layup or installing the fixtures or whatever was concentrating on what he will be doing with his girlfriend/pot pipe/whatever when he got off work that day.

This was not a problem with the larger Bayliners, above 21 feet. The new Bayliners have a much improved build quality, and if bought new and properly cared for, should last as long as you need it. As far as seaworthiness, that is dependent on hull design and size. If the boat has high freeboard, good design at the entry, and has appropriate deadrise, then it will work for what you want it too. Or you could just buy a Boston Whaler Dauntless and get it over with....

bayliner seems to be making a comeback, but they are still an entry level- basic boat that suits most people just fine. the delaware bay is saltwater, i am assuming. if that is the case I would get an outboard. the salt water in an i/o isn't very good for it. I know there are tons of i/o in salt but the fact of the manifolds mainly would convince me to an outboard

I had a 1989 Bayliner and thought it was a pretty good
boat,road good in ruff water and never leaked. The worst thing Bayliner done in my opion was when they packaged it with the Force motor,but who knew?
