Transom cap. Are you replacing the transom or just the cap? If it's a 1980 boat I'd highly recommend core sampling the transom to ensure it's No compromised.

Yep, I did a core sample in a few spots. dry. The boat itself is in immaculate condition, it was kept in eastern Washington its whole life, the trailer has not a single bit of rust on it which is amazing to me, and the motor is super clean. The story was the original owner had it until he passed away, his daughter got it and i got it on a whim. I am super happy with it not being as bad off as i thought. The project is in my shop but its a wedding gift for my friend and her fiance. They are doing most of the work, i am just the help and you all are my backup.

So i looked online i cant seem to find a replacement piece, do you think that it would be ok to have one fabricated out of aluminum to ensure a custom fit?

I have this exact boat, one year newer. My transom cap is also toast. There are no direct replacements that I can find, although it may be possible to piece one together using aftermarket Bass Boat Transom caps, as some of those are sectional. I've considered wrapping the area with wax paper, and then laying up my own transom cap with 1708/CSM. I figure 2-3 layers of 1708 will be about the same thickness of the original plastic piece. Of course, the issue then may be that the weight of the outboard hooks may crack the piece. I dunno. I'm in the same boat (pun implied). Let me know if you figure anything out, man.

aluminum would be fine, sadly bayliner got sold and usmarine who used to be the parts arm got merged in you might find the part but highly doubtful as i have tried sourcing plastic pieces for my 89 trophy with no luck .

ok Thank you. I will check with my welder buddy on his schedule and see if he cant mock something up for me. As far as attaching it. would silicone still be the best choice if it is aluminum? or would there be another prefered method.

Just a heads up; This last weekend I masked, PVA'd and laid out a CarbonFiber/Kevlar transom cap on my 1987 Bayliner Capri. Usually, the things that I think should be "simple and fast", are exactly the opposite. This time, it actually came out very straight forward. I purchased the fabric and epoxy online, prep'd (extensively) and laid it up. If you''re interested in some of the in's and out's of doing it this way, let me know....

I have a late 80's Bayliner. I found the drain holes holes for the splash well were too high making it hold water; Had to redrill new ones. Mine is a bear to keep clean.
