Bayliner Capri tops?

Hi folks, total newbie here with a question about canvas tops.

I'm looking at buying a 88 Bayliner Capri. It comes with a canvas top, but I'm wondering what are the capabilities of this. (Basically I'm looking for a bowrider that has the option of shade, as I don't want to fry out there on the water.)

Can the canvas top be practically used for sunshade? And what exactly is the difference between that and a bimini top?

Thanks in advance, these forums are a wealth of knowledge and I do appreciate your time. :)

(and off topic, wow, are prices of boats in Canada ever higher than those in the US... here 88 capri's are going for $5000-$7000  )

A bimini is a free standing top. It can be made out of a variety of materials, such as canvas. Their purpose is to provide shade. They provide very little weather protection since they are open all around.

An new canvas Bimini top will cost you about $ 200 and it well worth it. The standard canvas top is very restrictive - can't stand up in cockpit, etc.

Thanks guys, that helps. Yep a bimini would seem to be exactly what I'm looking for. :)

Look on ebay. Bimini tops are all over the place there.

I was lucky enough to buy a Capri that had all of the tops. The previous owner had a custom made bow cover, convertible top (really nice because it can close up the entire cabin and an exterior, heavy duty cover. The place he bought it from has since closed shop.
