Hi,

I have 1987 Bayliner Ciera 2150 with 1.68:1 Cobra drive and SBC350 / 5.7L (OMC with mods). Engine was rebuild this year and dynoed over 300hp@4700rpm / torque over 370 lbsft from 2500-4200rpm. It has XM256 (212/218) cam, roller tip rockers, Edelbrock Airgap intake/ 1409 carburator. I modified the drive with the nose cone. Please give me ideas how to improve top speed?

More pics of the project for everyone in Facebook:

Should I somehow trim it more??:

It holeshots ok, I usually have the trim tabs down for the take off. Then I take the tabs up, and trim the drive until the revs rise or it really slips.. I try to find the sweet spot. Maybe I don't drive it right?

14 1/2" 19p Alu
4200rpm 32.4kn/37.3mph Slip 0.17

14 1/4" 23p Alu
4000rpm 31.5kn/36.2mph Slip 0.30

25p Mirage+
3600rpm 36.1kn/41.5mph Slip 0.18 Measered from water speed by accident
3800rpm 32.5kn/37.4mph Slip 0.30
3200rpm 30.9kn/35.6mph Slip 0.21

That nose cone will most likely slow you down at the speed and depth you're running. Think about where the gearcase is and where it puts that extension when trimmed.

Hi,

I assume you saw this picture:

and this one:

I think the nose cone is not slowing me down.. Before the engine blew up 2011 July I hit about same speeds 36-37mph with out the nose cone. And all the parts below the hull have been "sharpent" since and engine has an extra 60hp..

I'm thinkin' that maybe it does not really have 60 more HP. If the 300hp@4700 is at the crank that is about 250 at the prop, and most 4bbl 5.7's have about 230 at the prop in stock form already.

Nada says the boat weighs 3125.Not that heavy for a cruiser.
In the flyby the boat seems to lay down too much.
Does it seem to respond to up trim? Seems like there is a lot of boat in the water.

Thanks Steelespike for your comment. I try to trim it more.
My trim pump was out this winter and has not worked reliably since, I have inserted about 3 quarts of ATF in it.. I wonder if there is something wrong with it.. I can't see oil coming out to the water nor to pilge..

I have added oil to get the trim all of way up to trailer position, then top the oil level again and then closed it. There is air there every time when taking the screw off, probably normal?

If you consult with the guys in the I/O forum they can probably help trouble shoot your trim problem.
I know next to nothing about trim but::
I assume you need to cycle it through the complete range and top up fluid as the air goes out of it.

Re: Bayliner Ciera 2150 Top Speed?

We had a 1986 Cierra quite some time ago with a stock 305 and OMC drive and Steelspike is extremely accurate saying that they are very light boats. They also have a very low deadrise and much less of a forefoot then most pocket cruisers even with stock power on board. Almost all of those boats came with trim trabs as well so please make sure that yours work and can be adjusted. They are greatly affected by weight distribution both fore and aft and performancee will vary with those changes. All fluid tanks were small but even there you could feel a difference between and the fuel tank at various levels (54 gal on ours).
Over at the baylinerownersclub.org there are over 15,000 members all with Bayliners that can chime many with the exact same boat results. We have been Bayliner owners for over 20 years and they have a very active and helpfull memebership at that site - currently on our Bayliner right now as we type this.

Hope this helps

Agreeded the nose cone at low speed's is actually a shovel digging up or down but it's digging water rather than flowing water around it. Post your gear ratio and lets see what's going on. Your engine mods are going to pick some top end mph say 2-5 mph not a big jump

Re: Bayliner Ciera 2150 Top Speed?

Hi,

Thanks all for your advises! My gear ratio is 1.68:1. Just found out yesterday that the brand new HEI distributor that I used in a dyno session has failed. The spark advance mechanism does not stop where it should buit lets it go all a way to the rotor cover. That meant total advance of 60deg... I but much... It fixed now. I will go for a test run now.

Get your motor running right and prop it it to turn 4600-5000 rpm at WOT. If you're only getting 4200 rpm with a 19", you're not even close.

The 2150(or any pocket cruiser) is not a "speed boat". If you can get low 40's out of it, you're doing good.

You'll likely get better performance with the larger diameter props.
