Bayliner Deck & Carpet Repair

I have a 1998 Bayliner Capri 2052. At the back of the boat, where we step in each time, the deck is giving way and clearly has rotted. It's under carpet so can't see how pervasive it is but the area feels about 1ft in diameter. Just got a quote of $4700 to fix it which is probably more than I could get for the boat. I am pretty handy but never worked with boats, resin, carpet etc. I was thinking of fixing it myself to give myself and the family a couple more years of enjoyment. My plan was to simply remove the carpeting from the rear 1/3rd of the boat, cut and glue a piece of 1/2" marine ply over original deck then glue down new carpet and use an aluminum or stainless steel beading to finish the edge of the board where it would step down 1/2" onto the original deck. I know it's a bit "heath robinson" but what do the experts think? Any suggestions will be welcome.

I would take the time to fix it right. Rot in the floor usually means rot elsewhere, too. Stringers and motor mounts may be compromised... Gluing down a sheet of plywood does nothing but hide the problem, and can actually accelerate the rot by keeping the affected area damp.

I certainly wouldn't want to subject my family to using a boat that is showing obvious signs of being compromised structurally.... Fix it once, fix it right. You can certainly fix it yourself for a lot less than $4700. I rebuilt my whole boat for less than $2500 in less than a year...

This is great stuff. Thank you. It would be great if you lived next door. Let's see if I can build up the courage to start cutting stuff away...

Did you say 1998? I thought Bliners went away from the wood decks before that.

PLEASE Learn to check the dates of the posts and it is even advised to check the profile to see when the original poster was last here.

I understand you are working on a bayliner and there are hundreds of bayliner posts but there is no need to comment in them. Consider the old posts similar to books in a library .......... we do not mark up old books.

This is the second time I had to review this procedure and it is obvious you are not even checking your earlier posts.
