I have a 1989 Bayliner Capri Inboard/Outboard 19ft boat with a 125 hp L Drive Force engine. Because this boat doesn't have alternator I have been experiencing problems with my battery not staying charged and not being able to crank the engine over. I have dual battery on the boat now and they are fairly new batteries hooked up to a dual switch. I don't have my Fishfinder/Marine Radio drawing off the battery either and my stereo turns off when I shut the switch off to the batteries. Does anyone know anything about the chargers they make that run dual banks at 10 amps per hour and how they work? That is problem one. My second problem is that my trim to lift my prop up isn't working either. I am not sure if that has anything to do with the batteries or not. Has anyone experienced this problem or knows what the problem might be? Thanks Shane

OK, first off, you motor does not have a conventional alternator, BUT it does have a charging system that should keep your battery charged. One battery should be sufficient.
Check the battery voltage with a voltmeter across the battery posts with the engine stopped, should read approx 12.4volts. Start the engine and check it again, should read approx 13.6 volts if system is working.
Likely causes of it not working are: faulty stator, failed rectifier, loose or corroded connections, or the multi battery setup and battery switch are not installed correctly.

Do you have a tach on the boat?
Does it work?

Need more info on the trim unit. Does trim motor make any noise when you push the switch?
Is there a clicking sound from the engine bay?
Is this problem present even when the batteries are fully charged?

Re: Bayliner L Drive Force

I have a tach on the boat and all it does is jump around and doesn't stay constant. The trim makes a noise when you put it down but not when your trying to put it up. I have never had trouble with the trim before I had trouble with the batteries. I did run the boat and flip the switch to the batteries off and the boat stayed running so I assuming that the stator is working but maybe not regulating to the batteries correctly.

That is a hybrid. Outboard powerhead, I/O drive.

But the post is a Trouble post, not a Non-repair post, so I will put it in I/O.

Good luck. :)

Re: Bayliner L Drive Force

well i have ur same boat, i wonder if the schemes are the same? anyway i tore mine apart i know all about them now, stator has two sides, charging and ignition. they are made so if u kill the batteries u can pull start it. there are basically two pieces to ur charging system, stator and rectifier doomywhatsis. these engine are prone to blowing the stock stator. that was my problem, and as a matter o fact i should be gettin the new tomm. :) i would start by trouble shooting that then moving to the rectifier. both pieces on ebay are only about 200, 150 for the stator if u cant get one in auction they sell a few in the stores. the trim tilt is a whole nother beast. i need more information to tell u if it wiring or the motor itself or the lines. gimme a rundown of exactly what happens and what u hear. the guys in the force forum are some help to. the force outboard motor 125 has the same parts so search on ebay "force 125" thats what i do u find some good stuff.

Re: Bayliner L Drive Force

Never turn off (disconnect) your motor from the battery while it is running. Damage has/will result from it. ( may be what damaged the rectifier in the first place.)

Better yet, after you get the rectifier replaced, and verify that all is working, get rid of that extra battery and the battery switch. They cause more trouble than they are worth.
