Would a 1969 17' Bayliner have had foam under the deck from the factory? Mine does not and it looks like the original flooring.

They didn't even have Hull ID numbers back then , probably too old for a title too.
Foam rots wood anyway, celebrate!

I knew you fellas would have the answer. Thanks!!

BTW.....it does have a title. The hull is in remarkably good shape, but not perfect for sure. I'll be posting more questions since I have little experience with repairs.

The hull is the last thing to go, barring any arguments with rocks.:)

The trouble is always transoms and stringers, the last place it shows up is in the deck, soft spots in decks translate into transom jobs.

I have a molded , cored, glass deck liner, no wood in the deck at all.
But the foam still rotted the stringers and transom out to mulch.

Appreciate the insight. Thanks!

No soft spots in the deck, but after creating some access holes to see below the deck (will cover with deck plates), I see some dark wood in the very rear of the floor. That tells me it's close to getting soft there.

I guess a person has to assess how much time and/or money they have to put into an old boat. My issue is I have a car hobby with a lot of unfinished work to complete on 2 cars right now.

How much would I expect to pay to have a shop put a new transom in this old 17' Bayliner?

More than the boat would be worth and you probably wouldn't be happy with the work. (this opinion based on admittedly anecdotal evidence and experiences from users on this site). Restoration work on an old glass boat is pretty much a DIY or nothing affair.

Funny thing about cores ( trans or decks etc ) the worse off the wood is..the cheaper the price to fix :) .

Look at it this way..if I can cut a skin of..and have the trans wood fall right into a trash can on its own then the HOURS and HOURS of sawing, cuttin, prying, bleeding can be saved. Take ONE day to cut/clean/prep/template/install and glass a new trans in ( with a helper and the right power tools of course ).

So not to go against EZs' assessment..each job can be Completely different then the next.

YD.
