There is a threaded fitting on the dipstick that you can attach an oil change pump to.

Yes, that is the right oil. According to Mercruisers recommendations.

Delo is much better than any walmart brand; it has more additives, and is designed to lube a diesel, which has a higher breakdown ratio, squared, due to the higher compression, and sulfer.

IMHO the Shell Rotella (sp?) is the best out there for a non roller motor.
Where is L/D when you need him.:D

Re: Bayliner Oil Change

i just changed my oil this morning. The old oil that i took out was dark greenish in color. It didn't even look like oil. It looked like dirty greenish water. Is this normal? My boat is running much better now. But sometimes when i accelerate and decelerate my boat will turn off.

Re: Bayliner Oil Change

Are you sure you didn't change the outdrive oil instead of the engine oil? Many places use Hi Performance Mercruiser gear lube (it's green) in the Cobra drives.

You dont suppose they put gear oil in the engine oil and he just found out about it ?

maby it was good he changed the oil before he'd be making that into a BAYLINER / MERCRUSIER / MERCRUISER ALPHA ONE

Re: Bayliner Oil Change

Oh to change the drive oil.....I can only assume its the same as a merc drive. Im not sure if theres one or more steps involved but Ill tell you how to do it on a merc drive.

On the lower part of the drive there is a drain screw close to the top there is a vent screw. You open the drain screw then open the vent screw and the old oil will drain out. ( not sure if you have a monitor bottle on that set up, problably not )

Once the oil is al drained out you need a lube pump to pump the oil back in at that drain plug location. You pump the drive full till the oil starts to flow from the vent screw. Replace the vent screw and as fast as you can remove the pump and put the drain screw back in so you dont loose too much oil.

NOW if you have a monitor bottle after you put the vent screw back in according to the manual you keep pumping in oil till it fill the bottle to the fill mark, then remove the pump and replace the drain screw.

NOTE : 1987 models I dont beleive had a monitor bottle. I had an 84 that didnt and I dont beleive they started till much later.

BL185
If someone has an OMC drive, don't give them Mercruiser instructions.
Don't assume that everything is the same, they aren't and if he tries to fill like a Mercruiser, he has a very good chance of destroying his outdrive. And many newbe's assume (and are wrong) that an outdrive is an outdrive and what works for one will work for another.
