Never in my life have I came even close to capsizing a boat, today was the first time out w/ our `88 17' 5.0 cuddy I had a Cruiser w/a 200 hp black max didn't matter how many people were in it or where they sat. Holy $h!t took it out by myself seemed to handle well and over 50 mph on the speedo, not bad considering the size of the lake and the boat! Well to make a long story short in this boat oh yeah it makes a diff how many and where u sit, six adults sober I might add and three younger kids up in the bough. Well I had it on plane 45 mph and it was porposing so I went to plane it down to settle the boat back onto a smooth V we had a head wind and maybe some sideways chop from another boat ? all of the sudden it tips slowly onto it's left side still motoring at 45 mph it actually took water in through the left rear window vent. I thought we were going over as I pulled back on the throttle it started to drop back down on to its belly seeming to correct its self, because of the chop and bounce my friend moved from the front left seat into the cuddy on the left side as the boat was I think in the air and as that wieght changed w/ the sideways chop ? I'm thinking it was just enough to tip it, has anyone had any wind or porpoising issues w/ these older bayliners ? The whole thing took maybe three or four seconds.... Thanks ! Tim.
I have an older 27' cabin cruiser with twin engines that would do the same thing. We were loaded with 2 adults and 6 kids. While up on plane all of a sudden it would tip to one side and turn that direction too. It was very un nerving. I was able to correct it by addding trim tabs.
