hey guys

i am looking at two different boats that are very similar but am looking for your thoughts

1 1997 bayliner 2050 capri with 5.7 merc
2 1992 starcraft 211 with 5.7 merc

both boats are within 1k of each other. the bayliner style is newer but the trailer is less than to be desiered.

if condition of motor, floor and stringers are alike, then it just comes down to quality, weight, and performance...

what are your thoughts?

Agree, you should get better resale out of the starcraft too. I could of told a little bayliner joke there but didn't want to offend anyone.

Which one is going to give me better performance? Looks like the starcraft may be heaver but with a deeper v.

The heavier boat and deeper vee mean smoother ride. Light weight boats are notorious for "beating people up". A deeper vee will cut through chop more easily.

I don't think you will find alot of people pointing you to the Bayliner, Starcraft is a very very good boat, on par with Lund in my opinion, get the Starcraft, all things being the same of coarse.

Guys, I'm pretty sure the Starcraft the OP is referring to is fiberglass. Starcraft glass boats are pretty standard mid-level quality boats. I wouldn't necessarily prefer an older Starcraft to a newer Bayliner. All comes down to current condition.

Since most just automatically dismissed your primary question - I will try to give a response that addresses it.

First - if all is equal in motor, floor, and stringers - then it alot of it comes down to your personal preference. Starcraft makes a nice Aluminum - but as mentioned above - their fiberglass stuff is decent but not at the same level as others.

Bayliner is an entry level boat - but is 5yrs newer.

All things considered - if the hulls are both in the same shape - I would think it would be about a wash.....The only thing that might make me lean one way other the other is the trailer condition.....

Both are gonna weigh around 2300lbs...probably get similar speeds, etc

I'd get whichever one seems to have been stored indoors the most, or at least covered properly.

The brand is not as important as the condition, as mentioned. That being said, if they are in fact in identical condition I would go with the Starcraft as I am a huge fan of their products.:D

I would agree with Huron. At the age of the boats...whichever one has been maintained & taken care of the best is the one I'd choose.

I'd also add that hull design is going to depend on where you boat...I boat on small lakes that have very few boats on them, so I prefer a lightweight hull.

I personally wouldn't dismiss a well cared for Bayliner, I've had nothing but good experiences with their products.

Re: bayliner or starcraft?

thanks guys for answers besides a simple "that one sucks"

the starcraft is a fiberglass boat, not alum

i am torn inbetween them. the bayliners hull actually looks cut better with larger ridges (if you would call them that) in the v. i would assume that these larger ridges would help hold stability in cornering.

interior styling and cleanliness - bayliner
outside - currently starcraft but bayliner just needs a good wetsanding/waxing/buffing
trailer - starcraft

all in all the bayliner is in fact 5 years newer and carries newer styling...will have to wait for the test drives when this damn ice melts!!
