I've been reading all these accounts of inconsiderate boaters and their big wakes with interest, as it brought to mind an incident that occurred last season involving a 42' Chris Craft. There is a long, 200 yard "putt" as I refer to it as that runs along the length of our marina where I put in. Once past the marina, you enter the main lake body where you can throttle up.
I was heading in with my father and 5 year old son one evening. As we idled along through the "putt", we noticed a cruiser coming perpendicular to us ahead. He swung it into a yawing turn and basically headed straight at me. I laid on the horn and he made a minor adjustment to avoid me, yet still passed within 5-8 feet of me. He was at that pre-plane speed where the boat is generating as large a wake as possible. We hit his wake in my Skeeter and not only took water over the bow, but struck the floating tire break. My dad yelled at the cruiser to no effect, but I made a mental note of the boat's name - "Warming Hut". The Warming Hut is a local ski shop, so the next day I looked up the owner and e-mailed him. He responded immediately that he had sold the boat through a broker the month before, and that the name was Coast Guard registered. He was VERY upset that a boat bearing the name of his business was out there creating problems. 2 weeks later I got a follow up. He threatened legal action if the name was not immediately removed and referenced my incident. The new owner complied and all is well, but it was nice to have my concern acted upon so quickly.
