Gentlemen, My 89 OMC Cobra is turning out well so far. How should I go about fixing this problem? It's obvious it was " beached" in the past, may happen again. I would like to make repairs and protect/reinforce for the future. the grey areas look to me like a JB weld product, and the white thats obviously not gel coat would be caulking. Thanks in advance.

ROFLMAO! Yea, you may want to use a keelshield or keelguard after you complete the repair. Oh, and avoid beaching it on concrete boat ramps like the previous owner did...lol

The JB Weld stuff you are talking about is probably Marine Tex. It is from what I see a similar product. I would sand it all smooth if it is still sticking good. I have used it for some repairs and can say it is great stuff. Once dry, you can sand it to the proper shape. And you can reapply it to build the repair up and feather it into the hull.

I would try to get behind it and see what it looks like. You might need to add a few layers of glass there to help reinforce it all.

I would also suggest the keelshield. Besides protecting the keel, it will cover this up so you don't have to blend in the gelcoat. (Well, that depends on how far back you go with it.)

agree with fixb52s, it needs to be smooth if you want the keel guard to stick.

Re: beach fix

I'm glad this came up because I have a similar problem with my resto hull. I was going to save the question for a while but since the opportunity has presented itself... The repair on mine appears to have been done with a Bond-O (Ayuh... :D) brand glass/poly kit. Since I'm replacing the deck too, my plan is to grind this mess off and repair it from the inside with alternating layers of matt and 6 oz cloth using epoxy resin. I think this will make a solid repair but it does leave me with a cosmetic problem to deal with on the exterior. I figured after the inside repair was done I'd fix the outside with peanut butter and finally some fairing compound. Does this sound like the way to go? How many layers of mat and cloth are required? I already have the mat and cloth so I'd like to use what I have.

Re: beach fix

After you make your repairs to the boat...........

Go look at that trailer setup. Particularly that bolt head in front of the black rubber keel roller. As well as all of the trailer surfaces ddirectly below the keel.
Do any of those surfaces on the trailer show any signs of contact with something???????

Like the keel of your boat?
