bearing carrier bolts

What is the trick to access the four bearing carrier bolts on a 1970 60 hp Evinrude type V electric shift lower unit? I can get two of them out but the remaining two are so close to the outside wall that a thin wall socket will not go over the bolt head.
Any and all suggestions are welcome.

I know that I've had those apart in the past, with no special sockets.

Some times you need to tap the sockets on if you are not able to get them on by hand.
