1974 Mercruiser 888....
After resealing the upper end of my outdrive I put everything back together and remounted the drive. I then pressure checked the unit again and found the bearing carrier seal was leaking. So I replaced the seal, torqued down the bearing carrier nut till my eyes were bloodshot, and it still has a slight leak.
Any thoughts as to how to remedy this?
Thanks,
74Silverline

Re: Bearing Carrier Seal

There is no oil leaking....I only get a leak when I have the drive drained of oil and pressure check it.
The seal that is leaking is large o-ring type that seals the bearing carrier to the housing.

did you use a new o-ring ?

is there a lot of old age showing on the carrier and the drive houseing ? pitting things like that

i am thinging your supposed to use a healthy coating of perfect seal on the carrier when you reinstall it

this helps to seal it and come out the next time

tommays

I agree, on a unit that old. I have an OMC and they recommend the same thing on the older units.

Re: Bearing Carrier Seal

The carrier and housing are actually in pretty good shape for their age. I did replace the old seal with a new one and I also did add the perfect seal to the carrier. One question though about the perfect seal. How long does it take to set up? I brushed it on around the carrier face that contacts the housing, waited a few minutes, and then installed it. I then pressure checked it right away. Does it take a while for that stuff to set up and make a "perfect seal". Maybe I should have waited a while before pressure checking....

Re: Bearing Carrier Seal

the o-ring should be the easy seal to have not leak ? nothing moveing

you could give it one more shot with the perfect seal and let it sit overnite but it sounds like old man time has the fit between the two parts loser than they should be

as a last resort and not by the book i work by the biggest o-ring supply house in the usa and have had to use a different one to get something old going again when nothing else will fix the problem

tommays
