Im trying to replace the sealings on the lower unit of my 68 merc 200 and I cant get the last oil seal out of the bearing carrier. Its that little seal with the metal ring on the outside and the rubber/spring on the inside. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Bearing Carrier

Lightly lubricate the lips of the seal with marine grease or oil as you suggested. Degrease both the cavity in the bearing carrier and the outer diameter of the seal.

Use a sparing coating of Red Loctite on the outside of the seal.

Find a deep socket or chunk of piping that will just barely fit into the cavity in the bearing carrier. It has to be long enough to clear the end of the prop shaft.

And has to be large enough so that it will bear on the outer edge of the seal. Carefully line things up and drive the seal home with a suitable mallet/hammer.

With (2) seals, the inner one will have the lips of the seal facing inwards to seal against oil. The outer seal will have the lips facing towards you, to seal water from outside-in.
