Bearings how to check

Ok so I searched the forums looking for this answer and could not find it anywhere.
Just got my first boat and when I took it home I could hear some rubbing or squeaking coming from the trailer. My question is how do I check if my bearings are bad? IF I take them out will it be obvious?
Thanks in advance

Re: Bearings how to check

I just replaced the bearings, seals and races. The complete kit is available at Walmart for about $13 per side.

If your trailer has any age to it you will be performing the same labor when you pull them out to inspect them and repack them with grease so for $26 it doesn't make sense to me to try and extend the life of a bearing.

Be careful not to scratch any of the surfaces of the race when you are re-installing them or you will wear out the bearing prematurely.

Thanks fellows. Tractor supply had the bearing kit for $15 why not replace them.

Good info here so far, however if that squeaking noise does not go away, you may have to check the shackle bushings. Or, just pour some old used motor oil over them and the springs for some good longevity.

Even if the squeak is not from the bearings it would be great maintenance to change them anyway.

It's a messy (but easy job). I used to work in a gas station so I've done it before on customer cars, my cars and other boat trailers. But this time I opened the yellow pages and found a guy who does trailer repairs.

He did both sides, replaced the bearings, seals and races and cleaned up the bearing buddies for $112 (tax included). For that price is was not worth it to me to get all greased up.

He did it in a few hours while I ran some errands.

I rent and my landlord does not like repairs being done in the backyard anyway.

And... keep a spare set available in your tow vehicle (used good condition works fine) for emergency. ;)
