restoring 1985 super sport ligh blue. the hull came back to color after heavy cut polishing. the gunwales are beyond hope. was thinking of coating them with a gray or light blue bed liner

any recommendations on brand names?

any recommendations on prep?

I'd never put it directly on the tin of the hull or boat, inside or outside.

Hard to get good adherence and hard to remove if you decide to remove it for some reason.

Parts that are removeable and replaceable, like the deck (floor), maybe, but not the hull or boat directly.

+1 for the JB Weld and backer plate. I used JB Weld for my transom repair, and sanded smooth, turned out real nice and looks smooth "like it didn't even happen". Personally I would NOT overcoat with bed liner produce....preparation is everything and if not done exactly right it wont adhere well and will peel.

Good luck and let us know what direction you go in...

There were lots of holes in my top side. I went the JB with tin backer route. Worked excellently and we're on like year 7 now.

3M 5200 cures into a hard rubbery state. It isn't sandable unless you like to throw away gummy sandpaper. It's supposed to be paintable, but I've haven't tried.

I use JB Water Weld for filling holes as it's a 2 part stick epoxy and you can form a wad of it, press into the hole and with access to the opposite side create a mushroom thus eliminating the need for a backer to hold the runny regular JB in place. The JB WW also sand like a dream.

On my latest Starcraft project, 18' SS I used Epifanies poly bead paint additive into the paint and catalyst hardener for all the gunnels and top surfaces. I think it turned out pretty nice as it hides minor imperfections and is very tough too.
