beep beep beep. oil alarm issue

1999 200hp carbed. when I turn the key I get 3 beeps. I cracked my oil reservoir cap and replaced with a used one and now get beeps at the ignition turn and while running. I took the cap off and pushed the float up to indicate full tank and it still beeped. Dropped float down to indicate empty tank and got the same beep. I disconected the ground and lead wire and still the same. Should the beep stop when I disconnect the cap warning sensor?

The float switch completes a circuit to ground so the oil warning horn should not sound when the float switch is disconnected.

There may be other issues with the oil warning system.
