Beginner needs 140 Looper Help ASAP!

Hey everyone!

TRIP ONE
I recently aquired a ( what i believe is ) a 1984 140 Looper. Upon getting the engine and dropping it on my 73 Grady White,
She started right up. I noticed it was running a bit rough so i replaced all of the plugs and wires. Took it out for the first time,
and the old girl was idling WAY too high. In my inexperience, i saw the screw that said " idle " on the left side of the engine and began cranking her in.
Idle was still irratic. Additionally, I also noticed that moving the throttle back and forth on the engine manually it felt very stiff, and the carburators would get STUCK in the WOT position.

My next step was that i did the following things.

- Sprayed under the flywheel with some silicone spray / WD. this loosened up the linkage nicely. I understand sometimes the timer base gets dirty.
- Took the Air silencer off and soaked the jets and inside of carbs in a good quick drying no residue carb cleaner.
- Put some seafoam in with my gas mixture.
- Tightened and went over all fuel connections to make sure all of the clamps are tight.
- Put that idle screw back to where i " thought " that it was before i touched it. I do not have any way of testing my engine at 5k RPMS, so im not sure what to do to properly adjust timing or if there is any other way.

TRIP TWO:

Dropped her in the water. Now she started much easier. idles MUCH better, and much lower allowing me to actually put it in gear. I took her up and down the canal a few times and then into the bay to try and open it up. Here are my latest issues. The engine now fell on its face every time i tried to hole shot it. Even trying to gradually accelerate, i had basically nothing. My brand new tach bounces ALOT at an idle, but then as soon as i touch the throttle it pins down to 0. Very strange.
Additionally, when i was moving a little faster than idle as soon as i let off the throttle, the whole engine slams down from its tilted position. I recently changed the tilt trim motor, and topped the unit off with fresh fluid. when on the trailer with all my force i cannot push that engine down while its tilted up. Dont know why this is happeneing.

Here were my next steps since that trip.

I took the two linkage tie bar pieces off of the top of the top 2 carbs. There is a set screw on each holding them onto the throttle arm i guess i would call it.
As soon as i loosen the set screws, if i attempt to now throttle it by hand, there is NO sticking issues!!! Tighten them up, and they stick. This is driving me absolutely insane. WD only slightly helped this.
- I pulled each wire off the spark plug while running, and heard a slight change in idle each time i did so proving the coils to be okay.



ANY advice would be really greatly appreciated as while i've been turning wrenches my whole life......outboards are obviously getting the best of me!! I feel like its either got to be a timing issue, or a carb issue. If you actually read all of this, thank you even more!!!

Bump,

Any pro's out there maybe can give me some insight? I would love to call the guy at the johnson/evinrude shop that i usually buy parts from but id hate to feel like im wearing out my welcome with all the questions

Hey so i dont know if anybody actually read my story or why i havent gotten any responses ( im new here) , but i'll speak anyway lol.
I found last night by using a spark tester that one of my coils was dead. ( bottom right facing back of engine). I then flip flopped it with the one above.
Once i did this, i got spark. Waited 5 minutes tried again, and no spark. Im assuming the coil is intermittent and bad. Could this be why i have no power when i give it the beans?

Hey thanks alot for all this info, it was incredibly helpful. I actually finally found / purchased a real FSM for my engine, and will be searching through it for the link and sync procedure. I have a coil and a rectifier being delivered today and am pretty excited to see / hear the results of these parts changes. Im really praying they
solve all of the problems that i've been having!

while the parts are comming in i'd try to free up your sticky throttle plates. i like pb blaster. throttle movement should be smooth and synced.
