Beginning a deck redo,,, have a question

Ok, first what i have. It's a 1978 Glastron V195 with a sweet running 200 Merc. Someone did a very poor job of a deck on it at some point in the past and I've torn it out and am getting ready to start cleaning it up and replacing it. My question is about waterproofing the bottom side of the wood. I will be using AC grade exterior. Could I use spar varnish on the bottom side? Or is there some hidden benefit of the resin? I am not going to be using carpet, gonna paint instead. Probably with a 2 part epoxy type paint. I just can't believe that carpet has a place in a boat. Do plan on going with a layer of CSM then cloth on the topside then paint over that. Think that the texture of the cloth with the paint and little rubber chips will be fine for grip. Any other advise or points? Have been doing ALOT of reading on this from the posts here and you guys have helped me answer a lot of questions before I had even asked them. Thanks for all the great info everyone, looking forward to your responses.

Re: Beginning a deck redo,,, have a question

If you are going through the trouble of replacing your deck, I would (I did) put some type of glass on the under side as well as the top. This will provide way more rigidity, which is important as a flexing deck will cause cracks and ruin the whole point of water sealing it to begin with. I used CSM (2oz) on both sides for a super strong deck, but even thin cloth will be 10x better than spar varnish or resin alone.

I am considering doing that but cost may prevent it. I have got to get this done as cheaply as possible. Also wanted to say that this only needs to last a couple of years. By then I will have another boat and can make up my mind if I want to do a full restore on this one or just get rid of it.

That's exactly what I am planning to do when my new deck goes in.

A full wrap of CSM, and probably a layer of cloth on top of that too.
