I recently acquired a 4hp johnson model 4bal75 long shaft outboard. It had been broken in half at the midsection when i got it. I had the midhousing welded up and then discovered that the driveshaft was bent. It is not the same diameter as the american made 4hp in 1975 and the keeper for the impeller is in a different location. I have been unable to find any references to parts manuals for the belgian made motors and would really like to get a driveshaft for this motor as it runs like a top

Hi Jim,
Welcome,

Coupla thoughts. I have a Belgian made Johnny, and with a bit of patience I got an OEM manual off ebay. There's always plenty advertised - I just had to keep checking till I found one.

And is it possible to get the driveshaft straightened? If it's not too bad, a good machine shop should be able to do it.

Here's a thought if you get that engine up, and running, and want to keep it. With the mid-section broke in two, it is probably also bent. They allow very little tolerance here, as I recall, about .005 out of parallel. What it will do is wear out the upper drive shaft bushing, and seal in the gearcase, or snap the drive shaft off at the splines. If you can find one, look for a different mid-section, or measure the one you have.

Re: belgian made johnson 4hp

the motor is up and running, purrs like a kitten. the problem is that being belgian made, it isn't the same as an american made part, i tried that already.
i actually need a parts list for the belgian models or another belgian made 4 hp for parts. I wouldn't mind turning it into a short shaft, as a kicker i can adjust that on my boat just fine, and it would work better on my drift boat.
