If anyone has a manual could you check and see if the bellhousing is a one or two piece. It allmost looks like it is machined with a upper and lower section. It looks like a seam just above the starter that goes all the way across. I have to check and see if if I have a crack in the block or if I have spit a soft plug.

Im sorry I didnt put the year. It is a 1985 on a 22 foot Sylvan. I would like to thank everyone for the advice and if anyone ever needs any info on fishing Lake Ontario I will be glad to steer you in the right direction.

The bellhousing is a single piece. There is a front cover below the block, just like a flywheel cover on a car.

Jeff, I'm not sure what you're trying to do....
If a plug has popped out of the back of the block, then it's motor out, no choice. You may be able to remove the front cover, but all you'll see is the bottom of the flywheel and a bit of the ring-gear.

Chris..............

Pulling a motor is nothing to worry about. Only takes about 2 hours to get mine out. Yours should be even easier. It'll give you a chance to have a good look at it and find more things to fix. :D

Chris......................

I was hoping I could find out if it was a blown soft plug or cracked block without having to pull the motor. It really has smoothed out running, but it just wouldnt be a boat without the extra work. lol. You are deffinatly right about getting a manual but I have to order one as no one around here has one. I dont have the first idea about pulling one but now I get to learn.

Is it leaking oil or water into the bilge? or water into the oil? If not, you're looking for a problem where you don't have one.

Sorry, I was gone for a bit. It is pouring water through the starter housing into the bilge as fast as you put it in. I am hoping it is a blown freezeplug as it would take quite a crack for water to come this fast.I have been out trying to figure if I am smart enough to do this myself but the only thing that concerns me is sliding the motor outward of of the shaft.

Re: bell housing-120 horse mercruiser

ya have to remove the outdrive first. shift to fwd, remove the aft trim cyl anchor pin and the 6 nuts and its off. then unbolt the front mount at the stringers and the two rear mount bolts then undo fuel,shift/throttle cables and electrical cables and exhaust hoses and water lines as nessasary. then hook up a lifting chain and poof its done. install is almost as easy only ya have to check/adjust shaft alignment.

Re: bell housing-120 horse mercruiser

Thanks.I think I will try it myself. I called a local boat mechanic and he wants 400.00 to take it out and put it back in. Are you saying to put the boat in forward to take off the lower unit so you can unhook the shift cable? And when I take that off will the shaft slide out of the back of the motor?
