I'm going to start to replace my Gimbal bearing, boot's waterhose and whatever else I find wrong with my 1971 type one outdrive and have a question to ask about the bell housing pivot pin removal. In my manual they talk about the pivot pins being secured by a cotter pin, mine seems to be secured by a solid dowel type pin, does anyone know the best way to remove these pins?

from the factory, they look like nails.... aluminum nails....... theres small nails and bigger nails... the small ones are nla. the older drives like yours and mine have the small nails. if you look close at the fore side of the gimble ring. you'll see a slot perpendicular to the nail. the nail is just bent over in that slot... unbend it and slide it out aft side of the gimble ring....

Here's what they look like when you remove them:

Thanks for the pic's, the seloc manual I have is real vague on the subject of the pivot pin's, in fact they call the safety a cotter pin and I knew that wasn't what I had. It's good to see a picture. thanks again

I went to that site and am currently downloading the shop manual. I've downloaded 2.7Gb so far and it's still not done (about 3.5 hours) is that normal?

All you need is manual #1. Not sure how you did it, but go to the link below (it's for #1) Right click the link and choose "Save Target As" and save the file on your desk top so it wills be easy to find.
Like ziggy mentioned, it only 1.2 GB, none of them are over 2 GB
