1989 mercruiser 5.7l alpha one shift shaft seal. Can this be replaced without the special merc tool. (tap it out with a hammer?). Or do I need a tool and press?. It doesn't appear to be leaking just figured since I'm in there change it.

Thanks

Re: bellhousing shift shaft bearing

I just did mine and used a long piece of skinny threaded rod maybe 5/16"?, and a couple of nuts and washers to press them off and then back on. something thin that will fit inside the bushing. I had to grind down the nut corners on 1 nut so it would fit thru the opening where the bushing sits yet still grab the bushing.

Had a hard time removing the shift arm at the top of the shaft. I used some heat to get out the small set screw but damaged the shift arm. Had to replace but wasn't an issue.

The new bushing/seal kit is redesigned and much larger and the seal seems better than the old.
The threaded rod made the job easy.

I used a male allen socket (short shaft version) to start pressing them out. Kept it centered very well, and the socket shoulder was perfectly sized for the bushings. Once the bushing was beyond flush, I used a properly sized socket to knock them out. Only took a minute or two to remove both.
The allen socket worked very well for installation too.

!/4 in drive socket and a c-clamp did the trick.
