Can i replace the cobra bellhousing on a 7.4 liter Volvo Cobra with a Volvo bellhousing? If so can I go with a Volvo O.D.? What type O.D. would be the best choice ?

Re: Btu

Not enough information to even try to answer. You say you have a "7.4 liter Volvo Cobra", since you posted in the OMC forum, does that mean you have a 7.4L OMC Cobra?? and not Volvo?
If it is an OMC Cobra, are you sure it's the regular Cobra with a dog clutch, or is it the King Cobra with the OMC cone clutch drive.

Years and full model numbers makes things a bit easier to figure out. Maybe pictures if you aren't sure.

PS: When you start a new thread, title means the title of your post, something like Changing outdrives instead of BTU

Bellhousing swap

I AM LOOKING AT BUYING A MID 90s VOLVO PENTA COBRA 7.4. IT HAS A COBRA BELLHOUSING NOW. I WOULD LIKE TO SWITCH OVER TO VOLVO STERN DRIVE.

Re: Bellhousing swap

I'm going do something silly here and ASSUME  (I assume wrong most of the time) that the engine and drive that are now on the boat are OMC. The problem with that, is that OMC had 2 "Cobra" drives. One with a Dog clutch in the lower unit for shifting gears, and one had a cone clutch in the upper.
Now, if that boat has the dog clutch drive, then yes, you can convert to the Volvo drive. But, if it's the other model, you can't. If it is the latter, run away fast. There are also no parts available for that drive, not even a water pump impeller.

So don't make any decisions on that boat until you know for sure.

Re: Bellhousing swap

BTU, I agree with Don. Need more information from you.
Do what Don says.... give a model number or post some pictures.

It's possible that the person who you are talking with isn't speaking the right marine language, or isn't all that familiar with these motors and drives.

The Volvo Penta AQ type drives were still being produced along side of the Gimbal system drives into the mid 90's. I believe there was a GM 7.4L AQ model.

Since the term bell housing is an automotive term [with exception to a Gimbal Bell] it's sometimes misused to describe a flywheel cover [the bell shaped housing on the back of the motor].

The AQ style transom mount unit is a "Transom Shield".
The Gimbal system transom unit might still be called a "shield", but is actually a Gimbal Housing and has a Gimbal Bell that the drive mounts to.

So, you can see that we need more info and pictures from you.
