Hi all

Vovlvo penta 5.7, 280 leg, old style twin bearing bellhousing

I had a growling noise coming from the intermediate bearings. After removing the engine and leg I replaced the bearings, seals etc. I still have the growling noise (maybe worse) the bearing really didn't need to be pressed in or out of the bellhousing. Is this normal. They weren't all that hard to press onto the shaft. Could it be that the housing could be worn where the bearings are springing or vibe rating. I really don't want to get a new housing if I don't need.
Side note. The reversing hook wasn't working so the leg kicked up on quite a few times before I could get it lifted and fix it. Although I could not see any damage or cracks.

Did you replace the ujoints? That may be your next move.

The bearings don't fit super tight, but if they can spin in the housing than the housing could be damaged. At least you don't have to pull the engine to do the ujoints.

The u-joints where brand new when I fitted the recon leg about 18 months ago. I checked them when I had leg off. No play and very smooth

If I put a metal bar on engine I can't hear anything. If I put it on the leg there's a very faint noise but if I put it near the grease nipple there's a lot of noise so I would say it is in there. Flex plate and flywheel were checks as well, all ok and bolts tight
