I have searched high and low to get the final word on this.

2002 VP DP-SM drive
Bellows kit - 3841481

According to the VP Factory Manual, 7743008, printed in 2003, page 79, it says to coat the outside of the gimbal bearing bore with VP gasket sealing compound. Of course, volvo no longer makes this product.

In the directions in the bellows kit, it makes no mention of sealant.

Definitive answer?

Never found a need for the sealer around the lip. All it does is create a mess. It doesn't seal anything, so I don't know why the used it. It's just one of those hold over steps from OMC when Volvo and omc were in the joint venture together. Before Volvo bought them out completely.
The nose of the drive pushed against the bellows is what forms the seal to keep water out of the bellows. Grease on the nose helps it slide and not push the bellows out of place.

Bellows adhesive is not mentioned because it's not needed. That's a Mercruiser thing.

On a forum ?????? Be real, everyone has an opinion on a forum and there is always someone that swears by what they do.
