Looking at replacing he bellows on a 3.0 Liter Merc pre-Alpha. The dealer said the part came in a "kit" and included a new shift cable. What's the going rate parts and labor?

Also, its time for a new impeller. What should that set me back?

By "pre-Alpha" I assume you mean MC1... All the parts in the kit can be purchased separately, and there is also a transom seal kit without a shift cable.

Trying to price a job like this is difficult. So many things can go sideways. IF it all goes to plan, replacing all the bellows and doing the water pump can take about 5 hours. If they hit problems, it becomes open-ended.

Find out what the labour rate is, could be anything for 50 to 120 an hour.

Chris. ...

a "kit" for an MC-1 with bellows, gimble, tools and alignment shaft is about $180. the whole water pump is about $50

as for labor, between $75 and $200 per hour depending on where you are.

if you do the job yourself, look at Chris's videos and the stickies.

remember a 20 minute job is one broken bolt away from a 3 day ordeal

The firm quote was for $1400, no add-ons, total for both jobs. Labor rate is $150.

Been there done that, but considering my old age (LOL), I'm only doing winterizing and oil change stuff myself any more.

The dealer has been MY dealer for 50 years now, so I trust him, but it nevertheless was sticker shock.

I did notice you called the drive a "Pre-Alpha". Which, of the 15, pre-Alphas is it?

Its a 1984 3.0 Liter 140 HP. I believe the model number was MCM 140. I know the alpha came later, that's why I called it a pre.
