Bellows Quesiton

96 Mercruiser 5.7 Alpha 1 Gen2

I'm replacing the bellows and shift cable. It appears that a person should attach and sleeve the new bellows to the pivot housing, then try to mount the bellow on the transom mount. I'm used to OMC, where it's the other way around.

It seems like it would be challenging to get to the hose clamps if the pivot housing is in place. Perhaps not. This is my first time with a Mercruiser.

Also, is there any way around using a special tool to unscrew the shift cable from the pivot housing?

Ayuh,... If you do it Exactly in the order stated in the factory manual, it'll all fit together just fine, 'n quite easily...

The New cables allow the offending piece of plastic liner to be unscrewed, so the extended socket is no longer needed...
Also,... A can of Mercury Power Tune will allow ya to install the transom end locking ring, without the tool...
And,... a 1/2" allen tool fits the hinge pins, no need for that special tool either...

Ayuh,.... Whichever,.... I've only done 1,.... Once,..... Along time ago.....


I told ya, I'm just a backyard hack,..... that can read....
