Bellows question

I bought a new outdrive which should be here saturday . The old outdrive had leaked gear oil into the drive shaft bellows . Sat like that all winter . The bellows looks good but I'm concerned that the oil may have damaged the bellows . So should I change the bellows also . They were just changed 4 years ago .
Thanks

Re: Bellows question

Well, the oil should not have hurt them, but after 4 year's they should be checked thoroughly for crack's weather checking. I'd just replace them myself just to be safe.

I would probably do ahead and do it. That way you start with everything new. You can get it done today and tomorrow before the drive arrives.

Re: Bellows question

I disagree. Inspect the state of the bellows, instead of just replacing it because its been X number of years. You'll see the cracks and it will start looking dried out, just like an old car tire that has dry rotted. People I know are getting 7-8 years out of bellows. Mercruiser does advise a much more conservative number, but like everything, that most likely to limit liability for those few cases. Inspect and make an informed decision.

I agree the oil will not affect the rubber at all.

Re: Bellows question

If you do need to replace it go with an OEM bellows they fit much better and are easier to instal.
